There are some myths about hypnotherapy which I can dispel:

Hypnotherapy does not put you into a zombie like state, or get you to do stupid or dangerous things. Stage hypnosis, where someone may eat an onion believing it is an apple relies on the willingness of the person in trance to agree and accept this challenge. If this person really didn’t want to go along with it, they wouldn’t. You cannot be forced to do anything that is not acceptable to you. A hypnotherapy trance is a relaxing and pleasant experience where you maintain at all times an awareness of who you are, where you are, and what you are doing. You are able to break out of your trance at any time should you wish to and you will not leave in a trance like state, as when you choose to ‘wake up’ you are fully present and aware. An ethical, trained and therapeutic hypnotherapist would never seek to cause you harm or traumatize you in any way. Equally a hypnotherapist cannot wave a magic wand and make you slimmer, happier, non-smoking, non-drinking without some commitment from you to want to change. Barriers to change can be resolved, your resilience and determination enhanced and self belief improved giving you a greater chance of success.
